Our approach to learning, development and assessment

Learning through play

Play helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which young children learn to think. Our setting uses the practice guidance Early Years Foundation Stage to plan and provide a range of play activities which help children to make progress in each of the areas of learning and development. In some of these activities children decide how they will use the activity and, in others, an adult takes the lead in helping the children to take part in the activity. In all activities information from the practice guidance to the Early Years Foundation Stage has been used to decide what equipment to provide and how to provide it.

Information Sheet

Welcome to The Alphabet Pre-School’s information sheet. This should tell you everything you need to know about our lovely pre-school.

We are a pre-school, which means your child will learn through play, supported by our experienced staff and guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Children in our setting are continuously encouraged to challenge themselves and develop their skills across a wide range of engaging activities within our learning environment.

When your child joins us, they will be assigned a dedicated key worker. This member of staff will support your child during their settling-in period and continue to work closely with them to help them progress, develop, and thrive through play during their time with us.

After the settling period, your child’s key worker will complete a document known as the 2-Year-Old Progress Check. This tracks your child’s primary areas of development to ensure they are reaching important milestones.

This document will be shared with you, and you will also have the opportunity to contribute your own insights. Its purpose is to ensure your child receives the right level of support in the areas they need most, while also providing a clear starting point to monitor ongoing progress.

The progress check and ongoing tracker entries will be passed on to your child’s next school to support a smooth transition.

While your child will have a designated key worker, please be assured that all members of our team are committed to supporting, caring for, and nurturing every child. We work collaboratively to ensure all children in our care are engaged, happy, and thriving.
